Fruity Oatmeal

The shredded apples or pears lend a nice consistency to this fruity oatmeal breakfast treat - great on a cold winter morning ...a great stick-to-your-ribs meal !!
2 cups water
2 cups low-fat milk
2 cups regular (not instant) rolled oats
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup chopped pitted prunes or raisins
2 apples or firm pears, shredded
Ground cinnamon
Milk, heavy (whipping) cream, or light cream (or half and half), warmed
Brown sugar or maple syrup
1. Combine the water, milk, oats, and salt in a heavy saucepan over medium high heat.  Bring to a boil, cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes.  Stir in the prunes (or raisons), apples, and cinnamon to taste.  Simmer, stirring frequently, until tender, about 5 minutes more.  Serve hot.  Pass warmed milk or cream and the sweetener.
