V2 suggestion

I would like to see the privacy marker for a recipe displayed on the main recipe summary screen instead of buried in the 'edit recipe' screen. That would give me a quick way to look and see which of my recipes are public or private without having to navigate into each one.

I'd suggest maybe developing a look & feel for the site that's not lifted directly from the source code and images of the Delicious.com relaunch. Just sayin'

We did pull a lot of the design and functionality of V2 from the delicious website. We really like the simplicity and usefulness of that layout. We do plan on moving away from the look and feel as we progress, but hope to stay very close to the functionality for managing lists of things (in this case recipes vs. bookmarks).

Fascinating. I use Delicious all the time, and I didn't make the connection.

You should now see a small privacy marker next to recipes that are not shared. Let me know if it's not there, or looks strange. Thanks

Yeah, and it would be great if that layout was public domain, and not the work of many hours of many people over the course of a year or so to get just right. It wouldn't be so bad if the design here were just inspired by the Delicious design, but I see my own work cut & pasted in the CSS class names and HTML source of your site.

We liked the simplicity and usefulness we hammered out there too—it took lots of meetings and user focus group tests paid for by Yahoo.

I don't work for Yahoo or Delicious anymore, but I certainly don't appreciate seeing what I and others did there getting ripped off like this. Your site could do better than this.

When we finally launch V2, with the changes and enhancements we have lined up, I feel it will be seen as inspired by Delicious and be a testament to the elegant design you and your team put together. We consider the Delicious plumbing a very strong starting point, but the design and code will (and already have begun to) diverge from the original plumbing based on use and feedback. Most (if not all) code will be rewritten, refactored or removed when it's all said and done. In the end however, both sites manage lists of things and will share many common elements (with other websites as well). All that said, I totally understand your issue with how we are evolving our next version and apologize for any problems we've caused. We will do better. Thanks for your candid feedback.

lmorchard, I *am* seeing that WGE developers are constantly changing and tweaking the developing second version of the site. It does stuff that Delicious doesn't need to do. And V2 isn't done - it's still in process, with featured being added. A number of us users are certainly involved as a "focus group" as we test, critique, and argue for favorite feature changes. I'm sure it will become less and less like Delicious, more and more like WGE. The overall layout, breadcrumb detail, and little boxes at the top might be similar, but there is still a considerable amount of work to do.

PS - I manage more than 3000 bookmarks on Delicious, using it almost daily, and I didn't see the similarity right away. So many interactive sites have similar colors, layout, style, and features. I am sure no one will think that this is a Yahoo project.

I don't mean to be overly aggressive, but I'm concerned by the responses to l.m. orchard here, so I wonder if a more direct approach is needed.

It is not morally nor legally right to take someone's source code, change some colors, launch, and say you'll get around to making more modifications later. And we're not dealing with "similar colors" or "inspired by" we're dealing with ripping off source code directly. It's hugely different, whether or not you personally think it is, or understand why we're making a big deal out of it.

You guys don't seem like jerks, and I don't think you did this maliciously, but I do hope you change your site as soon as possible. It won't be as fancy right off the bat, but you can honestly claim it as your own original work. That's worth a lot and should be step one.

I see the privacy indicator now on the main page. I like it. I actually found a few recipes that were marked private that I wasn't aware of. I may be looking right at it, but I can't seem to find the privacy checkbox to toggle the setting on the V2 site when I edit a recipe. I checked the FAQ and saw this:

How do I prevent others from seeing my recipes?
When you edit a recipe there is a checkbox that you can click to share the recipe with the public. Uncheck that box so it is not displayed to the public.

But I don't see it. did it disappear somewhere?

Mr Grumpypants, believe the site is being completely overhauled due to the issues posted above by l.m. orchard and Jon Bell so i imagine V2 will be having technical difficulties for awhile. love your name, by the way.

Jon Bell and l.m. orchard, I'm neither the creator for WGE nor do I know much about web development, so I'm not really speaking for Dave Weaver but I will say that you are right in stating that there was no malicious intent and Dave Weaver is most definitely not a jerk. WGE was originally created for his wife, to help keep her life in order and gradually expanded to include others into this community of people who like cooking and now have a space for them to share that love with others. This plea might be of little concern to you and I'm not sure if I'm helping or hindering Dave, but I do want to vouch for his sincerity and that it was not his intention to legally or morally cause harm to anyone. I'm sure that any offense was completely unintended.

thank you, Dave, and am looking forward to seeing the new and improved We Gotta Eat.

Thanks Eunice. We are doing an overhaul and eliminating the delicious user interface script. We are also changing some elements with the user interface in general so we don't look delicious.
